What is a Saline System?

A Saline (salt-water) purification system provides on-site production of the sanitizer necessary to maintain water in a safe, healthy and algae-free condition.

Sanitizer is produced automatically, within the water itself, and involves no handling, storage or adding of chemicals to the water.

A Saline Purification System, properly sized for its application, will eliminate the need to purchase sanitizing chemicals such as – ‘pool chlorine’, algaecides and ‘shock’ chemicals. back to top

How it Works

When salt is dissolved into water and the water is then subjected to a simple process of electrolysis, a very effective water sanitizer is produced.

In fresh-water applications, such as swimming pools, spa pools, therapy pools (and many more – see ‘Where a Saline System can be used’, below), salt is added to the water to produce a very mild saline solution, approximately 1/3rd the salinity of human tears (or approx 1/12th as salty as ocean water). The salt used is common, every-day salt, or sodium chloride – the same pure salt found in sea water and used at the dining table.

When the water (and dissolved salt) is passed through the ‘cell’ portion of the Saline System equipment, chlorine gas is automatically produced (from the dissolved salt). This chlorine gas dissolves instantaneously into the water (so is never a hazard), and produces high levels of sanitizer/oxidizer which firstly prevent the formation of ‘chloramines’ and other ‘chlorine compounds’ and secondly provides a safe and measurable residual of sanitizer in the main water body.

The elimination of ‘chloramines’ and other ‘chlorine compounds’ means the elimination of all of the obnoxious side-effects commonly associated with the manual use of ‘pool chlorine’ and leaves the water looking, feeling like the most pure, fresh and chemical-free water possible.

The dissolved salt is not consumed in the Saline System process so after the initial start-up salt is added, only top-up salt is required periodically (an average home pool will require as little as $10-$20 worth of salt per year).

The sanitizer produced by the Saline System can be measured using the same common Test Kits used for testing chlorine levels in pools, and the chlorine residual (or FAC, Free and Available Chlorine level) can be maintained at required levels by simple adjustment of the Saline System Output, or production rate (thereby satisfying health authority by-laws). back to top

Advantages of the Saline System

Eliminates the need to add ‘pool-chlorine’ chemicals, algaecides and ‘shock’ chemicals to the water.

You will no longer need to purchase, handle or suffer the effects of packaged sanitizing/oxidizing pool chemicals and the problems and risks associated with their use.

No RED EYES, No GREEN HAIR, No ALGAE !!!

Significant costs savings can be achieved by owners of commercial swimming pools and spas, water-park pools, water-features and other such applications which consume large quantities of chlorine. Home pool and spa owners realize less cost-savings due to the smaller quantities of chemicals required – and usually convert to the Saline System for reasons of personal and family health concerns, swimmer comfort, convenience and better water quality.

Healthy. A Saline Purification System will maintain perfectly healthy water, while eliminating the risks and problems associated with periods of very high or low chemical levels. FAC (Free and Available Chlorine) can be maintained at levels to comply with local Health Authority requirements.

Prevents algae growth. The constant ‘shocking’ of the water as it passes through the Saline System ‘cell’ together with consistently maintained sanitizer levels in the main water body will prevent the growth of all common algae.

Environmentally and Ecologically Positive. The Saline System eliminates the need to manufacture, transport and store ‘pool-chlorine’ type chemicals and instead uses only pure natural salt from the ocean – and then re-cycles that salt indefinitely. Re-cycling a natural product – what a concept!

Comfortable swimming environment. Users of swimming pools and spa pools enjoy the natural therapeutic and health benefits of the mild salt water - with none of the obnoxious effects usually suffered with manually-chlorinated water. Swimmers who suffer so-called ‘chlorine allergies’ will find relief from those symptoms in a saline pool. Other advantages for swimmers include NO RED EYES, NO IRRITATED SKIN, NO DAMAGED HAIR OR BATHING SUITS.

Common Questions, with Answers

How salty is the water? In fresh-water applications (such as pools, spas, water-features, lakes etc) salt is added to the water to produce a salinity of approx 3000 ppm (parts-per-million), which is 1/12th as salty as ocean water, or 1/3rd as salty as human tears. Pool-side plants and water-feature vegetation, in almost all cases, are unaffected by the low salinity water.

Will the salt corrode or damage my pool, or the pool equipment (pump, filter etc)? No, the salinity is not sufficiently high to cause corrosion. The water salinity is similar to that of eye-wash solution (very mild). If corrosion was a problem, the Saline System could not have achieved such world-wide acceptance and popularity.

Will I need to change the water? In most cases, no. We only suggest changing the water if its hardness and quality is such that it should be changed in any case.

Will I need to change existing pump, filter or heater? It is not necessary to change any of the existing equipment if it is presently in satisfactory operating condition.

How easy is it to install a Saline System? Installation on home pools and spas usually takes only an hour or two, and is often done by (do-it-yourself) home owners themselves. Commercial installations are also very simple and can become slightly more complex due to equipment and pipework layout, or access and space limitations – but if there is a pump and filter, the Saline System can be installed.

How often will I need to add salt? Salt is added to the water (except in sea-water applications) at the time of installation. After that, only top-up salt is required to make up for salt lost through water splash-out, over flow due to rain, filter back-flushing, leaks in the pool etc. Evaporation does not reduce the salt level nor is the salt consumed in the Saline System process. back to top

Types of Applications

Where can a Saline System be used?
The saline method of water purification can be used on virtually any body of water which presently requires some form of sanitizer/oxidizer to maintain the water in a healthy, algae-free condition.
There must be water circulation (pumping) and filtration equipment and other aspects of water-balance (such as pH control, for example) are to be maintained at levels conducive to the use of chlorine.

When either the volume of water, or the ‘sanitizer demand’ are extremely high, a Saline System may either be unsuitable for the application or can be used in conjunction with other supplementary chlorinating equipment. Use our SYSTEM DESIGNER to find out what size Saline System suits your needs. back to top

Necessary Precautions (for buyers)

Don’t be sold an Under-sized product.
Saline Systems come in various sizes (or sanitizer Output/production capacity). If the Saline System you purchase does not have the ability to produce the required mount of sanitizer for YOUR application, it will ultimately cost you extra money and cause unnecessary inconvenience and maintenance problems. Aspects to consider when sizing a Saline System include:

Daily operating time. The system you purchase must be able to produce the necessary sanitizer within the daily pump/filter operating time. For reasons of ‘power costs’ you may choose to operate your pump and filter for only 6 hours per day (for example). The Saline System you choose must therefore be able to produce the full daily sanitizer needs for your pool, in 6 hours.

Sanitizer-Demand. Regardless of the daily operating time, or the volume of water in your pool (or other application), there exists a certain ‘sanitizer-demand’ of the subject water. This sanitizer-demand is dependent upon many factors including (not necessarily limited to) water temperature, various water constituents, the number of people (or birds or animals) and other contaminants which enter the water, the effects of sunlight on sanitizer efficiency, the daily number of hours the water is subject to use – and more.

It is not wise to simply select a product which handles say 40,000 gallons of water, because the other factors effecting sanitizer-demand in YOUR case, may result in that product being capable of producing sanitizer sufficient for only 20,000 gallons of YOUR water. Use our SYSTEM DESIGNER to correctly size YOUR Saline System.

Rate of Production. Although a particular model Saline System may be capable of producing sufficient sanitizer for YOUR application, on a daily basis, it may still prove to be Under-sized for YOUR needs.

A Commercial Spa, for example, may require a total of say 1 pound (16 ounces) of sanitizer per day. The salesman may offer you a product which produces say 32 ounces per day – and tell you what a deal you’re getting - it can produce 32 ounces per day, or 1.33 ounces per hour (32oz/24hrs).

BUT, if the spa is used by a heavy load of people in the morning (say over a 4 hour period), the water may need say 12 ounces of sanitizer within that 4 hour period, but still require only 16 ounces of sanitizer in the entire day.

The above scenario means the Saline System must be capable of producing at least 12 ounces within 4 hours, or 3 ounces per hour – in order to keep up with the sanitizer-demand which exists during the heavy use period. The system offered by the salesman would result in long daily periods when there is insufficient sanitizer in the water, resulting in health risks to users. Our SYSTEM DESIGNER will eliminate the risk of purchasing an under-sized product, or a product of less-than-desirable quality. back to top

Beware of ‘Importing’ a Saline System

Some overseas-based web sites offer Saline Systems at cheap prices, often with the added advantage of a favorable foreign exchange rate. You may ‘think’ you will save a lot of money – BUT please think about the future warranty and service problems you may face. Electrical specifications, fluctuations etc also differ from one country to another.

If you import a product and then have a warranty or service problem, Who Do You Call? Someone in Australia? Who can service your Saline System? How would you get a replacement part under warranty?

You are best advised to deal with a well established local brand name and supplier. back to top

Who Should Use This Site, and Why?

This web site will be helpful for anybody who presently uses ‘pool-chlorine’ or similar or any of the so-called ‘alternatives’ (bromine, ionization, ozone, baquacil type products, etc) in an attempt to keep water healthy, safe, free from algae growth.

If you are tired of lazy-looking, dull-looking water, battling algae growth, throwing money down the drain on chemicals – a Saline System will be good for you.

If you are concerned about your family’s health and swimming comfort – a Saline System will be good for you.

If you are looking to improve commercial pool or spa water quality for your patrons (or customers) and thereby improve your profits - a Saline System will be good for you.

If your Water-Feature has lost its aesthetic qualities because of constant algae growth - a Saline System will be good for you.

If you already own a Saline System, or are looking to upgrade an older system, use our SYSTEM DESIGNER or SYSTEM UPGRADE features to find out what your system should be capable of producing and/or the cost to upgrade to the latest technology.
